Project FUN!

7th and 8th graders presented their creative projects for the recent literary works we have studied.

We had news broadcasts, poetry portfolios, book trailers, book posters and review essays, info-mercials, illustrated children's books, original music compositions, dioramas, graphic short stories, and MORE!

I have to say that if there was a Project MVP Award, it would go to Joshua Maurer who wrote and recorded a song (music, lyrics, multiple instruments, harmonizing over his own voice, etc.) for The Hobbit.  It was INCREDIBLE and could be on the radio this minute!  If he makes a digital copy available, I will share it!

Here are just a few representations of other wonderful projects.

Second Quarter, Continued...

Here's another glimpse of what is going on in my classes for those who are interested! :)

7th English: We just finished our unit on The Hobbit!  Students will present their culminating projects on December 18th and 19th. Now we are beginning an intensive writing unit where we are putting together the skills we have learned throughout the first semester. After the writing unit is an awesome poetry unit!

8th English: We are in the midst of a writing unit, using MLA format with a research paper.  Students are not only learning the proper structure, they are also learning how to support their opinion using reputable sources.  Students are also taking today and tomorrow to present their culminating projects from our last literature unit on Shakespeare and A Midsummer Night's Dream. The projects are fantastic, and the students had a wonderful class period explaining their hard work today!

8th Bible: Unit 4.1 continues with learning about the early church during the Roman Empire.  Students will memorize The Apostles' Creed during this unit.  Additionally, students will be responsible to chart their "daily" (at least five times) devotions over break.

OTHER REMINDERS...

1. The Annual Speech Meet is approaching!  Students must have their chosen piece (historical speech, poem, novel or short story excerpt, or Bible passage) approved by me by Thursday, December 20th.  More details are forthcoming to the students.

2. The Middle School Christmas Party will be on Thursday, December 20th during 7th and 8th periods.  More details will come from room moms.

3. The ACSI Creative Writing Competition is underway.  All submissions must be given to me by January 24th.

4. Midterm exams are January 15-17.  Exam schedules will go out on January 8th.

5. K-12th collaborative unit on the Moon landing is January 3-4.  5th-8th grades will be going on a field trip to the Moon exhibit at Heinz History Center on THE DAY WE RETURN FROM BREAK (January 3rd)! Permission slips were handed out today and are due by Thursday, December 20th.

How cute are these Armadillos?

All homerooms did great work with the door decorating contest and the food drive!

Second Quarter Start :)

It's been a great start to the second quarter already!  Here is a very brief look into what is currently happening in my classes...

7th English: We finished a lengthy grammar unit, and now we are reviewing all the concepts and applying them to our writing.  For the next three days, we will be doing intensive writing in class and working through sentence mechanics, structure, and organization in writing.  On Thursday we will begin our new literature unit: The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien.  This unit will include vocabulary assignments,  writing prompts, reading assessments, and a culminating project.  It will be loads of fun!

8th English: We are smack dab in the middle of our literature unit: William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.  The students are doing an amazing job acting it out in class, and this literary work has brought about some great class discussion.  This unit includes a project, vocabulary and writing work, and reading assessments.  Although acting skills are not being evaluated, some students would be receiving an A+++ in this department!

8th Biblical Worldview:  We are almost finished with Unit 2.  We are looking to God's Word alone to tackle some difficult questions. What makes up a church?  What MUST be included in a church?  What are the marks of a true church?  What are primary and secondary issues that we should concern ourselves in as church members?  What is doctrine and its importance?  What is the danger of legalism in church?  Why do we go to church?  Why and how did God set up the church, starting at Pentecost?  We are looking mostly to the Pauline Epistles to answer such questions.  Discussion has been great, and this group of students is amazing!  Prayers appreciated!

Also, please enjoy this video clip from Bible class.  The students don't get recess, and they work so hard! Sometimes they deserve a 3-minute dance break...

Room 120 Happenings...

Here is some insight into what is happening in my classes:

7th English: We are loving this short story unit on folktales!  We are reading literature from Vietnam, West Africa, Japan, England, Rome, China, Greece, (Native) America, and more!  Students are learning higher level thinking skills and gaining a deeper understanding of theme, inference, motifs, and more!  Grammar and writing are also being assessed through various activities.  Additionally, students are learning specific note-taking skills in this unit.

8th English: The students are proving to be masters at generating discussion and writing reflectively during our current novel unit.  This intense novel, The Book Thief, has not only deepened our understanding of World War II, but it has also exposed us to beautiful literature, all the while strengthening our Christian worldview.  Most importantly, the novel facilitated discussions of human sinful nature, forgiveness, being God's image-bearers, and the undeniable power of words.   During this unit, I have especially loved digging into what God's Word says about our tongues in terms of taming them, using them to build-up, standing up for the oppressed, and more.  We have another week and a half of this Holocaust literature unit, and then we will be watching The Hiding Place movie.

8th Bible: We just finished the longest unit of the whole year!  The test is tomorrow, and today is the review game to prepare for the assessment.  This first unit was an overview, and next we will be digging into the details of church history.  These 8th graders are so insightful, so deep, and an utter JOY to teach.  Continue to pray that we grow closer to Jesus during this time together!

Here are some random photos of recent classroom happenings and such!  Enjoy!

Class Update

Next Friday marks the half-way point in the quarter!  It's already going by SO FAST! The students are doing really well, and I am so thankful to God for each and every one of them!  Here is a bit of insight into what we are doing in my classes.

7th English:

Students did a fantastic job with The Giver!  They performed really well on the novel test and proved to understand what we read and discussed.  I gave them a challenging essay where they had to choose a theme from the novel and explain it using examples from the novel and incorporate their Christian worldview.  Chosen themes included the importance of memories, how ignorance is bliss but knowledge is power, and what it means to sacrifice.  I realized that these 7th graders have a lot to say, but I also see that we need to work on structure and organization in writing.  These are skills we tackle in our current unit on journalism, in our next unit which includes a five paragraph essay with a three-point-thesis, and throughout the rest of the year.

Right now, they are learning the components of journalistic writing, and they are writing four newspaper articles that would come from their imagined utopian societies.  Some students have already shown me their articles, and they are fantastic!  You may have seen on RenWeb that the first drafts are due on the 18th, and the final drafts are due on September 28th.  Writing has been the only homework I have given in the last two weeks, and I am also providing class time to write, proofread, edit, etc. Bonus points will be given for those who put it into newspaper format (see rubric).

Seventh grade had an exciting review game the day before their literature test. Teams faced off for a riveting show down!

8th English:

Grammar and punctuation and writing, oh my!  We had a quiz today on the ever exciting subordinating conjunctions, dependent clauses, complex sentences, and more!  The goal in grammar is to become great writers, and I am seeing evidence of this already.  Up next is an intensive writing unit followed by a new novel unit.  I am especially enjoying the amazing work ethic and the fun nature of these students!

8th Biblical Worldview:

We are still in the first unit which is an overview of the Bible.  I love how much deeper the students are discovering that everything points to Jesus.  We have discussed how the law and the prophecies have been fulfilled by Christ and how He has been our promised rescuer from Genesis 3!  We have decided that we feel very blessed to live THIS side of the cross.

Today we covered the temptations of Jesus and discussed how we, too, can respond to temptation using God's Word.  I was especially touched that students shared how they have been specifically convicted by Scripture.  Up next we are learning about Pentecost and the gift of the Holy Spirit AND spiritual gifts!  Memory verse is Jer. 31:33-34, ESV due on the 27th.  Always see RenWeb for date details.

The 8th grade made a timeline for the most important events of the Bible.  Each pair had to explain their poster and their event's significance in Biblical history.  We're especially excited about the last event depicted in our timeline but not yet fulfilled: Christ's Return!

Other important information:

1. We are getting homeroom t-shirts!  They are AWESOME!  We ask that each student bring in $3 to off-set the cost of the shirts. This is due next Friday to each homeroom teacher.  We will send home a reminder.
2. Each student needs a way to save his or her work in the computer lab.  There are three common ways that students do this: A.) Flash-drive B.) Email their work to themselves C.) Use Google Docs It is not productive to do work in the computer lab on papers and such when students cannot continue working at home or the next day at school.  If your student does not have a personal email account, a flash-drive is best.  Please let me know if purchasing a flash-drive is a burden; I have some spares.
3. Scholastic orders are due TOMORROW!  Please use the link on the website.  I also handed out the fliers.

5. Attend soccer and volleyball games to support your classmates AND to earn Falcon Fray points for your homeroom! Athletic events can be found on the  TCS Website Calendar .

What's Going on in Mrs. Agate's Classes..

7th English: We just started a new novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry. The genre of this work is dystopian fiction, and it is a modern classic.  In addition to reading and discussing the concepts and themes of this novel, students will also be working on their writing with a grammar review unit, writing prompts, and more.

8th English: We just began reading Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes.  We've already had wonderful class discussions concerning "ignorance is bliss; knowledge is power" (a key theme to this literary work of realistic fiction).  In addition to this literature unit, we will be working on grammar and writing.  Our first grammar unit is a review of the parts of speech, punctuation, and other fundamental concepts.

8th Biblical Worldview: Students were given their unit study guides, and we are going to be taking a look at the early church in the New Testament throughout this unit.  We have already completed the first lesson on covenants, and I am impressed with the knowledge of God's Word within this wonderful group of students.  The memory passage for this unit is Jeremiah 31:33-34, ESV.
Homeroom Dance-Off for Falcon Fray Battle Day

I love getting to know these amazing students!  And they posed wonderfully for their polaroid pictures!

HAPPY SUMMER READING!

What a year we have had in the middle school!  I am so thankful for the Lord's provisions and blessings upon us all this year!  I am also thankful for the bumps along the way and how He brought us all through! I am also SO VERY thankful for the loving support of all the amazing parents!  It's easy to see where your children get their awesomeness from! THANK YOU ALL!

Below is a letter I emailed to all rising 7th and 8th graders.  Happy Summer Reading! And blessings upon your summer!

************************************************************************************************
Dear Parents of 7th and 8th Graders,

I am thrilled to be teaching English to your 7th and 8th graders next year!  To encourage summer reading, I have implemented an optional summer reading and writing assignment for my middle schoolers.  If a middle schooler completes the following assignment and brings it in on the first day of school, he or she will earn a writing assignment grade of 100% to start off a great year of school.  We will briefly discuss what we have read over the summer during our first day of English class, and each student who has completed the assignment can highlight the main points of his or her paper for the class.
Happy reading!
Love in Jesus,
Mrs. Agate

SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT
1. Read as many novels as you can over the summer!
2. Choose your favorite novel (age appropriate and approved by a parent or guardian).
3. Write a report on your novel.
REPORT ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS
1.) Your report must be typed: double spaced in 12 point, Times New Roman font.  The report should be five to six beautiful paragraphs.
2.) The first paragraph should be a brief overview of the novel. Provide basic information about the book, and give the reader a sense of what your report will be about. You should include:
  • Title and Author
  • Publication Information: Publisher, year, number of pages, etc.
  • Genre
  • A brief (1-2 sentences) introduction to the book and the report/review.
3.) The next paragraph(s) should summarize the book and provide an overall explanation of what the book is about. You should include:
  • The setting of the book (time and place)
  • An overview of the main characters
  • A brief summary of the plot (no spoilers, please!)
  • The author's main theme or purpose
4.) The next paragraph(s) should include your personal opinions about the book and how successful it is.  In this section of the report, you will analyze or critique the book. You can write about your own opinions; just be sure that you explain and support them with examples. (Using a direct quote or two from the book can be helpful!) Some questions you might want to consider discussing in this section of your report include:
  • Did the author achieve his or her purpose?
  • Is the writing effective, powerful, difficult, beautiful?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesss of the book?
  • For non-fiction, what are the author's qualifications to write about the subject? Do you agree with the author's arguments and conclusions?
  • What particularly did you appreciate about the book? (Did you relate to certain characters?  Was is compelling reading? Why and how?)
5.) For the final paragraph, briefly conclude by pulling all of your thoughts together.  Questions to consider are:
  • What is your overall response to the book? Did you find it interesting, moving, dull?
  • Would you recommend it to others? Why or why not?
  • What impression did the book leave you with?

Do your best, and have fun with this!

SUPER PROUD!

These rising Freshmen gave AWESOME speeches today, as each is running for Student Council! The voting takes place tomorrow, and I have NO idea who is going to be selected because each student has had a wonderful campaign.  As cheesy as it may sound, these kids are all winners in my book!  All candidates did an amazing job discussing how much they love Trinity Christian School, their fellow students, and the Lord.  STUCO will be blessed to have any one of these servants.  Great job on the election, Allie, Spencer, Amanda, Nia, and Jordan!

Middle School English and Bible Update

Here is the brief monthly update!  Happy March!

7th English: We're in the middle of a Short Story "Coming of Age" Unit!  I am having a wonderful time reading and discussing rich literature from Hemingway, Trudeau, Hughes, Kipling, and more. This unit has nine short stories, and we only have three left to read.  Students have also been writing reflections, demonstrating their understanding of theme, and learning more about internal and external conflict.  I especially enjoyed the students' narrative essays titled "Seventh Grade" after we read Gary Soto's short story, Seventh Grade.  Additionally, we have continued with grammar lessons.  We will complete our grammar unit this Thursday and will begin our new novel unit, Breaking Through by Francisco Jimenez, when we return from break.

7th Bible: We are in the middle of our unit on The Prophets.  This unit covers ALL of the writing prophets and relates their messages us, while giving us a better understanding of God's redemptive history.  We will complete this unit when we return from break.  The memory passage for this unit is Malachi 3:1-6, ESV.  The students can work on this memorization over the break!

8th English: Students did SUCH a wonderful job with Shakespeare, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading their papers supporting their theme of A Midsummer Night's Dream.  Additionally, many of their coinciding projects were fantastic and gave a deeper insight into the drama and the characters. We also finished our Flowers for Algernon unit and had amazingly deep discussions on this riveting literary work by Daniel Keyes.  I was impressed with the written essay response on the assessment for this story, and I can see the growth in their writing and their higher level thinking skills.  Right now we are deep into grammar and will be concluding our current grammar unit before break.  When the students return from break, we will be jumping into our next novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding.  This novel is an allegory for society as a whole, and the students really get into it!  More writing will take place in this unit as will deep class discussions as we dig into the symbolism of this work.

8th Bible: We are currently in The Reformation in church history.  While most of our students have a solid foundation of understanding, this unit goes much deeper into the meaning behind The Reformation and the results as far as the impact on the church, the Body of Christ.  The reformers have been an inspiration to the students, and we have had excellent class discussions on justification, sanctification, and emphasizing how  The Word of God is our refuge and strength.  The memory passage for this unit is Eph. 2:4-9, ESV.

Thank you!

THANK YOU!

Dear Parents,

Excuse this VERY delayed message....

On behalf of the students, thank you so much for helping to make our Valentine's Day special!  The kids loved their breakfast drink bar and had a great time passing out treats.  Here are a few photos of the time we had.

Update and Announcements...

Writing and grammar and literature, OH MY!  Church history and Proverbs and worldview, OH MY! Yes, we are tackling a lot of things in middle school right now, but the students are thriving and doing so well.  I am especially impressed with class discussions and their willingness to share.  Sometimes I wish that parents could be flies on the walls in the classroom because you all would be very proud of the work your students are doing!  Here's a little look into what is going on:

7th English: We finished our literature unit on The Hobbit, but the students won't be presenting their projects until February 15th.  In the meantime, we will be working on grammar and writing.  I was SUPER impressed with their understanding and analysis of Tolkien's writing.  Each student had to choose a theme for The Hobbit and support it with a five paragraph essay using a three-point-thesis.  Their writing is really coming along!  Our next literature unit is a coming-of-age short story unit.  We will begin this in about a week and a half.

8th English: We finished our literature unit on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and had a blast with this unit!  In addition to learning Shakespeare, students wrote amazing thematic thesis essays, and I was so proud of their interpretation of Shakespeare's message through this comedic drama.  Even though we have finished the unit, the students won't be presenting their projects until February 22nd.  We are currently doing grammar lessons and will be starting Flowers for Algernon on Monday.

7th Bible: We are on Unit 5: Prophets! As God's nation grew, so did the need for leadership.  We are still in desperate need of spiritual leadership today.  We have enjoyed talking about the leaders we look up to and what God's word says in this regard. What made these Prophets great leaders, and what makes US great leaders?

8th Bible: We are finishing up a unit on the church in the Middle Ages which includes the fall of Rome, the rise of the Roman Catholic Church, and the beginnings of Islam.  We have been looking at how the surrounding cultures influence Christ's church.  It has been a great time of discussion comparing our culture to the culture in the 1000s and seeing the church responds to pressures and such.  There's nothing new under the sun, and God is in control! Praise Him!

REMINDERS:

  • Students have to have their Speech Meet piece memorized and perfected by February 13th.  We have a great variety of poetry, prose from favorite novels and stories, historical speeches, and Bible passages.  I am excited to hear the recitations, and I joyfully anticipate the culminating school-wide event on February 23rd.
  • We will have a little Valentine's Day party on February 14th, after lunch from 12-12:30.  Middle schoolers can bring cards or treats for the whole middle school (48 students in total) or for just their individual class.
  • Work-A-Thon needs your help to design the t-shirt logo!  Information went home on this today.
  • Don't forget to be checking RenWeb periodically! :)
  • In case you missed it last month, here is a video from our Medieval Fair: https://www.facebook.com/trinitychristian.net/videos/1657996440890250/
Look how adorable these people are!  Their sweet faces make my every day.

(Sorry for those who were out sick or missed any of these photos!)
