Literature
We will be using the latest course of Elements of Literature. The text is full of poetry, short stories, and more. Additionally, we will be reading three larger works together this year: Lord of the Flies, The Hiding Place, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. We will be doing a variety of activities in Literature this year including group projects and classic novel book reports.
Writing
We will be doing a great deal of writing this year in 8th grade! We will mainly be using the Shurley Grammar curriculum to enhance our writing. We will also be implementing Excellence in Writing as well as using some supplemental materials. Often we will do writing projects based on our Literature. We will also team up with other classes to work on our writing. In the 4th quarter, we will be doing extensive research papers and mastering MLA format. Additionally, we will do creative writing and journaling.
Grammar
We will be using 2013 curriculum from Shurley English Composition and Grammar, and we will use other resources in addition to this book. Grammar will also be graded through the papers, writing assignments, essay question answers, etc.
Vocabulary
We will be using a combination of vocabulary from the literature we read and words from the text Vocabulary from Classical Roots. You will be given a list of words for each unit or story. We will focus on spelling, pronunciation, and meaning. We will have vocab tests at least twice a month.
Analogies
We will be practicing analogies periodically throughout the year. We will be using Analogies II as well as other resources.
